Battlefield Vietnam
Battlefield Vietnam is ...

Battlefield Vietnam is a first-person shooter primarily designed for multiplayer matches even though it provides a single player mode. It was developed by the game development studio Digital Illusions Canada and eventually published by Electronic Arts in March 2004. The game was built with a modified engine of its predecessor BATTLEFIELD 1942.

Battlefield Vietnam Intro
Battlefield Vietnam Intro

Battlefield Vietnam takes the player for a ride to historical settings of the Vietnam War, e.g. Cambodian Campaign and Operation Flaming Dart.

An outstanding feature of the game is that driving a (land-, sea- or air-) vehicle enables the player to select a song to be played from a list containing sixteen well-known songs of the Sixties:

  1. Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Fortunate Son"
  2. Edwin Starr - "War"
  3. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - "Nowhere to Run"
  4. The Troggs - "Wild Thing"
  5. Rare Earth - "Get Ready"
  6. Canned Heat - "On the Road Again"
  7. The Guess Who - "Shakin' All Over"
  8. Count Five - "Psychotic Reaction"
  9. Deep Purple - "Hush"
  10. The Kinks - "All Day And All Of The Night"
  11. The Kinks - "You Really Got Me"
  12. The Box Tops - "The Letter"
  13. Jefferson Airplane - "Somebody to Love"
  14. Bobby Fuller Four - "I Fought the Law"
  15. Budapest Symphony Orchestra - "The Ride of the Valkyries"
  16. The Trashmen - "Surfin' Bird"

Citation from the manual of the U.S. edition (page 8):

Rock and roll as you thunder into combat. Press 'o' in any vehicle to bring up the song list, then press the letter of the song you want to hear.

In dependancy of the distance everybody on the battlefield can hear the selected song. With a powerful gaming computer and a 5.1- or 7.1-channel speaker system the player can hear a mix of songs coming from different directions.

Maybe this feature was extended with the release of a subsequent patch.

Citation from the manual of the U.S. edition (page 8):

Everybody in the vehicle with you can hear a song you select from the original Battlefield Vietnam song list.

Moreover, the player can put her resp. his own favorite songs in the application folder of the game.

Citation from the manual of the U.S. edition (page 8):

Add your own songs to the radio list by finding the folder named "My Music" in the root Battlefield Vietnam directory, then placing your MP3s there. Only the first 26 songs in the folder are accessible in the game.

But in contrast to the songs supplied with the game only the driver can hear her resp. his personal MP3s.

The March edition 04/2004 of the German magazine GameStar commended Battlefield Vietnam with the GOLD-AWARD for a computer game that is of great entertainment value: The game received a score of 88 out of 100.

BattleForge
BattleForge is ...

BattleForge is a RTS computer game for Windows playing in a fantasy world. Like World in Conflict it does not use any lengthy base building and ramified ability trees during the RTS battles. An Internet access is required to play the game.

BattleForge Announcement Trailer ( EA )

To get a feeling for the power of the game I strongly recommend to read the comprehensive BattleForge magazine available in the languages as follows:

The description below is only an abstract of different sources.

The game features virtual trading cards that are the central gameplay element. Each card represents a specific combat unit, building or spell. The four basic colors of the cards represent four different powers. Red stands for Fire, blue for Frost, green for Nature and purple for Shadow. Playing fire cards bring aggressive units with offensive strength dealing a lot of damage on the scene. Frost cards are the counterpart: They represent the defensive element and can take tons of damage. Nature cards are easily controlled – the troops are well balanced and can heal allies. Shadow cards symbolize risk. These infernal creatures put – in the true sense of the word – everything on one card by using dark magic. The player can use up to twenty cards to assemble an army for a match. The cards constituting an army are called deck. It is possible to store configured decks for later re-use. There are a total of 200 cards available. The downloadable Play4Free edition contains 32 cards. The retail version (available for 30,- € in the EU) provides 64 cards and 3,000 BattleForge points (BF Points), an in-game currency. Players can buy and sell cards at an in-game auction house, using the BattleForge points. Players can also invite each other to conduct a direct trade.

BattleForge Action Trailer ( EA )

BattleForge provides a singleplayer and a multiplayer mode but both modes are entirely played online. During the singleplayer missions you follow the story on a fixed path. The further you victoriously progress in the adventure with your BattleForge army, the more waypoints and branches appear on the world map. These markers lead you to new battles. During the game you encounter 2-, 4-, or 12-player PvE battles in which you jointly fight against the CPU troops. This means that the singleplayer campaign develops into a unique one-player cooperative crusade! Of course, there is a PvP mode (player versus player). Basically there are two types of PvP battles: Head-to-Head (one player versus another player) and Team-vs.-Team (two players versus two other players).

The famous German composer Tilman Sillescu wrote the orchestral “BattleForge” music. The production process – from the first concepts to recordings to the final transfer to the game – took more than one year. Tilman promptly decided to use a symphonic orchestra for the Soundtrack after he and his team had seen the first BattleForge screenshots.

BattleForge - Orchestra ( EAFrance )

The April edition 05/2009 of the German magazine GameStar commended BattleForge with the GOLD-AWARD for a computer game that is of great entertainment value: The game received a score of 87 out of 100. Moreover it was commended with the award "für Innovation" (in English: for innovation).

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Game Trailer) ( machinima )

Unfortunately the game could not meet the expectations of many journals reviewing computer games. E.g., the GameStar magazine stated in the May edition 06/2007 that the potential of the multiplayer shooter game Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is very good. But then in the October edition 11/2007 the game initially received a score of 79 out of 100.

ET. Enemy Territory Quake Wars Trailer ( tristanvintersson )

After the release of the patch that updated the game to version 1.2 it was given an incremented score of 81 out of 100 in the December edition 01/2008 praising the improved balance of the classes and the denser atmosphere. Moreover this edition put the statement that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is the perfect multiplayer shooter for clans, whereas individual players were recommended to play other multiplayer shooter: The GameStar review primarily criticized that the game insufficiently supports individuals to play as a team.

  2. The AWARD "für besondere Atmosphäre" that shall denote the exceptional atmosphere of the strategy game.

And in the multiplayer mode, that it is not a simple bonus. Just this part should encourage everyone to buy the game."

Heiko Klinge, one of the GameStar's editors, wrote:
"The game is a strategic adventure for the heart."

And Gunnar Lott already wrote in the edition 09/2006 of the GameStar magazine:
"... I just play the beta version and enjoy it to the full. The management of the troops works so well, that I can't imagine to get accustomed to a game without an army controller again."

Supreme Commander

Supreme Commander is a real-time strategy (RTS) computer game developed by the game development studio Gas Powered Games and published by THQ in February 2007.
The game is described as the spiritual successor of the computer game TOTAL ANNIHILATION created under the direction of Chris Taylor by the game development studio Cavedog Entertainment and published in 1997.
After about ten years it shall bring back the strategy to the genre of real-time strategy computer games. In an article published by PC Gamer in August 2005 Chris Taylor claims: "Almost all modern RTS games do not actually employ strategy. In reality, they simply pit opponents against each other in resource wars, where the combatant with the most units wins." One of the features shown at E3 2006 was support for dual-head video cards, allowing two separate views of the map on two monitors connected to the PC.

Fabian Siegismund, yet another editor of the GameStar magazine, stated in a preview published in the GameStar edition 11/2006: "Supreme Commander is not a game for in between but a real challenge."

World in Conflict
World in Conflict is ...

World in Conflict has been often wrongly categorized as an RTS computer game. Instead it should be considered as an RTT computer game. The game is focused on fast action. It does not offer base-building or resource gathering. Instead, players will be given a pre-determined amount of in-game reinforcement points to buy units with. When a unit is destroyed, the points used to purchase it are slowly filtered back to the player.
World in Conflict was developed by the game development studio Massive Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment in September 2007.

Fabian Siegismund, editor of the GameStar magazine, already writes in the April edition 05/2007: "When Supreme Commander is the chess of the real-time strategy genre then World in Conflict is the American Football: colorful, noisy, fast, tactical. First of all I can become a participant of an already running multiplayer match at any time. Moreover action fans will immediately become acquainted with the controls of the game, and I've never seen such graphics in another strategy game. The explosions, the detailed units, the landscape, the clouds - It's sheer lunacy. KVM-Switch Versand is a German online shop specialized in the selling of KVM switches and accessories. By the way, the token "KVM" is the abbreviation for the words "keyboard", "video" and "mouse".

Now you maybe think: "How are KVM switches related to (computer) gaming?"
Well! In my humble opinion, persons who like computer games are also interested in computer hardware sometimes. Therefore they have not only one but two or more computers, like me. And I'm really flabbergasted about the wide range of KVM switches offered by this shop. There are switches capable of switching between several output signals intended for a 7.1 speaker system! For example: UNICLASS 2-fach DVI+DVI/USB2.0/Audio KVM-Switch. KVM-Switch Versand primarily offers high-quality branded articles. Citation from the KVM-Switch Versand's Web site (unfortunately in German): "Herzlich Willkommen im Fachhandels-Shop mit der Top-Marken-Auswahl."

TigerPixel.DE recommends this shop:

  • KVM-Switch Versand's Web site satisfactorily shows that the persons behind the scenes have a very good knowledge of KVM switches.
  • KVM-Switch Versand's Web site provides many details (e.g. various images) for each offered product.
  • KVM-Switch Versand's T&Cs (i.e. general terms and conditions, in Germany AGB called) are easily to understand and, in my humble opinion, without any pitfall for every customer, e.g. transfer of risk, in Germany Gefahrübergang called: The ordered articles are covered by insurance during the shipment.
  • KVM-Switch Versand has a fair model for shipping and handling costs, at least for German customers. Moreover the purchase can be done on account, normally.
  • The persons behind the scenes are really fast. In December 2006 I ordered the UNICLASS All-Driver PS2/VGA 4-Port KVM Switch article. I received the article already at the subsequent day.
Meanwhile KVM-Switch Versand has replaced it with the slightly changed follow-up model UNICLASS Desktop PS2/VGA 4-fach KVM-Switch.
